Face to Face with those in prison: A Grace Story
Kathy Pettinga has been sitting down to write a letter once a week for the last 11 years. Each letter, sent to prisoners from all over the country, contains a little bit of hope and a whole lot of Jesus’ love, forgiveness, and compassion.
When Kathy’s church decided to spend a weekend ministering to prisoners in a local jail more than a decade ago, Kathy had no idea God was starting a new chapter in her life and ministry. During that weekend, Kathy was struck by two significant things: 1) prison is a lonely place and 2) the body of Christ is the body of Christ know matter where it meets. She recognized that believers behind bars need to be discipled and encouraged just like the rest of us.
Kathy was working full time with Operation Mobilization (OM) when she first became a mentor with Crossroads Prison Ministry. She recalls that her full time office job left her with little time to minister directly to people. Being a mentor with Crossroads Prison Ministry was a way for her to minister to people one-on-one while maintaining her full time schedule with OM. In the years since, Kathy has seen God’s hand in the work she is doing. She is amazed that time after time God has given her the words and scriptures needed to encourage, disciple, and care for those in prison.
