The Jesus Way: Divorce and Promises - Integrity in our Commitments

Scripture References: Matthew 5:31-37

Matthew 5:20 frames Jesus’ entire Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7

 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. 

Jesus calls us to a way of life that transforms the whole person

Jesus looked at righteousness through a lens rooted in a living relationship with Jesus that first reorders our heart … then realigns our behavior. Works from the inside out … not the outside in.

In Matthew, Chapter 5 he gave us six illustrations and Jesus framed each in the same way: “You have heard that it was said (OT command) … but I say to you (Jesus’ emphasis).

Two weeks ago: We discussed our anger and lust … today divorce and the promises we make.

Jesus certainly doesn’t dodge difficult issues.
